Chapel of Our Lady
An impressive feature of Würzburg Market Square is the late-Gothic Marienkapelle or Chapel of Our Lady. Everything about the building seems to strive heavenwards: the high windows, the slender buttresses and the filigree form of the spire, with its gold-plated statue of the Virgin Mary on top. Work was started on the building around 1380, though it took about a century to complete. The area around it, which has since been the site of the Market Square, had previously been the Jewish Quarter. As in many other cities, the outbreak of the Plague had served as a pretext for expelling the Jewish population, and the Marienkapelle was built right on top of where the burnt-down synagogue had been...
